Boss refuses to let hotel supervisor go home to care for pets during snowstorm, leaves note that makes supervisor quit: 'The note was upsetting and made me feel unwelcome'

This hotel boss left a very strange note on an employee's desk, leaving everyone asking, "Why?"

Handwritten notes can be very nice! I personally love seeing handwritten notes, no matter how small, because I like seeing people's unique handwriting styles. It means that a person cares enough about you to take time out of their day to write you not a text or an email, but a note. Even a quickly scribbled-out note is just kind of nice to see.

However, this person's boss left them the oddest handwritten note, and no one knows quite how to interpret it. In fact, this person quit their job over it!

It all stemmed from an ongoing snowstorm (the big blizzard of January 2026, to be specific! It's currently early February, and that snow has yet to melt, which continues to make transportation difficult across the East Coast). Here in New York, I believe we got almost the same amount of snow, as this person — between 11 to 14 inches depending on where you were. They mentioned that they recently moved up North, so they might even be New York for all we know. Even in the city that never sleeps, the snow shut down basically everything.

Of course, some jobs simply don't stop due to snowfall. If you work at a hotel, I understand why your boss still needs you to come into work. Even though it's hard to traverse the sidewalks, travelers are still staying at that hotel.

I'm not saying the boss handled this well, though. This person explained that they went in for their shift, and were then told they had to stay at work overnight! They couldn't do that because their pets needed them. That's a very good reason! A lot of pets are crated until their owners get home, and they need to use the bathroom and eat. How would that manager feel if they weren't allowed to use the bathroom, eat, or drink water for 24-36 hours? Not great, that's for sure!

"Problems + issues don't matter when cows need fed + cows need milked."
Is this sarcastic or written with good intentions? On the one hand, this person was talking about pets, not cattle, but the same principles apply! The pets need fed and watered, too.
It is an odd thing to write though, especially when this could've been a text or email, instead of a note written on paper and cut out then placed on a keyboard. It's all rather passive-aggressive, regardless of the true intentions. Like, they'd never write this about someone's kids… so why do so for pets, which need the same kinds of care?
Some people speculated that maybe the boss was saying that farmers never take a day off of work because their animals need them. If the boss was comparing the job of a farmer to a hotel worker being unable to leave because guests would be on their own, I mean, that's some barely coherent logic there. It makes zero sense considering that this person literally left to care for their animals?
If anyone knows what this means — because it's possible there's just a cultural barrier blocking out the nuances here — please speak up in the comments!
